Multichoice reports $50 million loss

MultiChoice faced a setback in the first half of its financial year.

The African Entertainment Company declared an after-tax loss of R911 million ($50 million) for the period April to September 2023, a significant decline compared to the after-tax profit of R55 million ($3 million) recorded in the same period of Last year.

What caused it? Multiple choice assigned declining profitability due to power outages, cost of living pressures and the sharp depreciation of local currencies against the US dollar. Revenue also fell 1%, from 28.7 billion rand ($1.58 million) to 28.3 billion rand ($1.56 million).

A defeat in South Africa: Notably, MultiChoice saw an increase of 70,000 DStv subscribers in the rest of Africa, but this growth was offset by a loss of 486,000 subscribers in South Africa, resulting in a net loss of 416,000 90-day active subscribers in the whole group.

Subscriber losses in South Africa were also influenced by the company’s choice to remove 311,000 non-revenue generating customers from the base, which were “linked to special load shedding campaigns” carried out by the group.

Zoom out: Although the company suffered a loss, there were some positives, such as Showmax’s external revenue increasing 46% from R381 million ($21 million) to R555 million ($30 million). dollars), and 5% growth in MultiChoice’s premium customer base.

MultiChoice may have had some losses, but it’s shaking things up with a big win. The pan-African streamer is revamping Showmax, and the new version will hit screens in February 2024.

This makeover comes after MultiChoice invested about $27 million (R500 million) in Showmax.

Out with the old, in with the new: MultiChoice drops standard and Pro subscriptions and welcomes three new faces: Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile and Showmax Premier League. The Entertainment plan will offer entertainment content, including movies and shows from American company Peacock.

By TechCabal, the Entertainment Mobile plan is the same but will only be accessible on mobile devices. But both plans do not provide access to all live Premier League matches and additional content from the competition. The Showmax Premier League plan will exclusively stream all Premiere League matches, and no other entertainment.

Bigger and better: MultiChoice’s new projects and content partnership with Peacock are leading to intense competition for its streaming rivals. A recent report shows that Showmax has toppled Netflix as the market leader in Africa with 1.8 million subscribers. The streamer’s new plans tell us that he doesn’t plan to abandon this title anytime soon.

MTN Nigeria in talks to acquire 9mobile spectrum

MTN Nigeria, a subsidiary of the South African group MTN, is negotiating to claim a role in the 9mobile spectrum.

The telecommunications company is said to be in advanced negotiations with Emerging Markets Telecommunications Service Limited (EMTS), known as 9mobile in Nigeria, to acquire a significant stake in its spectrum.

The deal, if successful, would mark an important step in the revival of 9mobile, which has been struggling financially since the departure of its main technical partner and investor, Mubadala from the United Arab Emirates in 2017. At that time, MTN had also proposed to acquire the telecoms. The success of the current offering could also see 9mobile’s 12 million subscribers join MTN’s 77.6 million subscribers, giving the telco 76% of the Nigerian telecoms market.

No confirmation yet: While neither 9mobile nor MTN have confirmed this project, sources close to the companies have suggested that negotiations are indeed underway and making serious progress. The National Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria’s telecoms regulatory agency, also says it is not yet aware of the ongoing discussions between the two parties.

Zoom out: This is not the first time that MTN has attempted to acquire another telecommunications company in the country. In 2015 he succeeded acquired Visafone Communications Limited. The move included the transfer of stakes and frequency spectrum, helping MTN expand its network coverage in the country.
