Finance ministers from various African countries will meet from today for a full week in Zimbabwe, from February 28 to March 5, 2024, to discuss various pertinent issues regarding their economies.

Speaking to journalists recently about the conference, Ambassador Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, said it was timely, given the impact of multiple crises in Africa, including the cascading impacts of climate change and the war in Ukraine in the post-Covid era.

The fifty-sixth conference, organized by the ECA, is being held under the theme “Financing the transition to inclusive green economies in Africa: imperatives, opportunities and policy options”.

According to an ECA press release, the conference will include the preparatory meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, followed by the ministerial segment of the Conference.

In addition to reviewing statutory matters of the Commission, the Conference is one of the continent’s main platforms for dialogue and exchange of views among African ministers responsible for finance, planning and economic development and central bank governors on issues relevant to Africa’s development agenda.

Experts are expected to offer solutions on how Africa can cope with endless economic shocks, how to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and reform the global financial architecture to benefit from the continent.

In the recent past, calls for an equitable international financial architecture have gained ground at conferences of African countries.
