Colombia’s decision to recover items from the wreck – located in 2015 – would be controversial.

An American salvage company also sues Colombia for half of San Jos’ treasures. The ship’s cargo is worth between $4 billion and $20 billion. Bloomberg reported last month, citing court cases over the past several decades.

Correa, Colombia’s culture minister, promised that the recovery of the San Jos artifacts would be a scientific expedition, according to AP.

“This is an archaeological wreck, not a treasure,” Correa said, according to the news agency. “This is an opportunity for us to become a country at the forefront of underwater archaeological research.”
