Presentation Faye Oldenwhose internship at JENMAN African Safaris in 2023 took her on an exciting journey as she delved into the Cape Town Competitive Cost Benchmarking Project:

The entire journey of the cost-competitive project has been both educational and challenging. The research itself has both positive and negative aspects. However, this prompted more questions and sparked more interest in the issue. I learned a lot about the world of work, research and about myself thanks to this project. Overall, it broadened my perspective and created lasting memories.

The biggest obstacle in this project was the search for other tourist destinations. Not being able to visit or even have prior knowledge of the areas made it difficult to find suitable examples for price comparison. I couldn’t get a sense of the quality or standard of these restaurants, shops or tourist hotspots. So I had a hard time comparing destinations. Pena Palace in Portugal can be a much more enjoyable experience than visiting the Castle of Good Hope; To say that visiting Cape Town offers better value for money when comparing these two things is not accurate. I understand that the project is about prices, but one would much rather spend more money on a brilliant experience than less on something that isn’t worth one’s time.

Following this theme, it is obvious that the highlight of my plan is to get out and explore Cape Town’s tourist attractions, shops and restaurants. I was able to experience the quality of service provided to tourists. An example includes visiting a coffee shop at Kalk Bay and the waiter looked vibrant and welcoming. He made the customers laugh and gave them a taste of South African humor. The stores in this area were unique, with varied products and most often had a hippie vibe that attracted tourists. Another area with a similar atmosphere was the thrift stores of Observatory.

The second-hand clothes were good quality, at great prices and there was something for all styles. The shopkeepers were also very helpful and hospitable, which is priceless. THE Waterside is particularly aimed at international tourists with luxury shopping and expensive foods or souvenirs that might make a South African’s jaw drop. Despite the higher prices, the service and food are of a higher quality. You can have a lot of fun in just one area. It’s worth noting that just looking at the price doesn’t give the full picture. Understanding the quality of service, products and general atmosphere of a destination is crucial for a more accurate comparison of travel destinations.

Cape Town Restaurants

Although there were positives and negatives, I was able to learn a lot during this project. The first lesson I learned is that the office space is collaborative. Even though I had my own job, I was able to seek advice and guidance from my colleagues. This not only benefited the project, but also made my entire stay at JENMAN an enjoyable and fun experience. From coffee breaks to moments of laughter and quiet moments of concentration, it was amazing. I like working in an office, as long as I can move around and have pleasant conversations. The research reminded me of the positive aspects of South Africa and what a privilege it is to live here, especially in the Cape Town region. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was not being afraid to ask questions and being able to feel at home in the office.

From my week to JENMAN African Safaris Through the extended dates of this project, I have grown in my research abilities and professional experience. The research, office space and presentations all contributed to my growing interest in marketing and the world of tourism.
