Nairobi will host the Consumers International World Congress in December, the first to be held in Africa, to develop practical solutions to consumer protection issues.

The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK), which selected its bid to host the forum, said Kenya’s selection symbolizes the steps taken in promoting consumer welfare in recent years.

“We look forward to sharing our experience in promoting consumer protection, both nationally and regionally, as we work towards joint solutions with the leaders in attendance,” said CAK Acting Director General Dr. Adano Wario.

The event is organized by the London-headquartered charity Consumers International, which brings together governments, international agencies, businesses and civil society to tackle pressing issues affecting consumers around the world. It takes place every four years.

The agenda of the forum, which runs from December 6-8, is to seek answers to crucial questions as the world faces a myriad of disasters ranging from rising consumer prices to risks linked to climate change and consumer vulnerability in a context of rapid digitalization.

“World leaders have a short window of opportunity to tackle the most important challenges that threaten people and the planet. Over the past few years, we have seen that breakthrough solutions will depend on consumers,” said Helena Leurent, Managing Director of Consumers International.

Previous editions of the congress took place in Portugal (2003), Australia (2007), Hong Kong (2011), Brazil (2015) and Portugal (2019).
