My Bush & Beach trip to Tanzania

I was invited by Company Selous Safari to experience the ultimate Tanzanian bush and beach safari tour. A combination of an adventurous safari that included Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (formerly known as Selous Game Reserve) and the private island of Fanjove in the Songo Songo Archipelago, just off the coast of Tanzania.

JONGOMERU “Probably the most authentic safari I have ever been on! »

You enter the camp to find a cool, refreshing space decorated in yellows, browns, and other earthy tones.

An authentic safari experience – isolated, unspoiled, far from the crowds. It’s just you, the wildlife and the ancient baobabs that dot the landscape.

My first destination was JONGOMERU, a hidden gem tucked away in a remote corner of Ruaha National Park. Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park, with only a handful of camps. Southern Tanzania is underrated and deserves more time in the spotlight!

The staff welcomed us with open arms, like long-lost family members. Onesmo was always ready with a cold drink while Wilson planned our days effortlessly – from hearty bush breakfasts to refreshing drink stops. The food was incredible – hard to believe you can whip up quality meals like this in the middle of nowhere! Chef Juma’s fish curry is legendary and everyone has been asking for the recipe!

The camp overlooks the season Jongomero River (which flows mainly after the rains of November and December). At the entrance to the camp stands a giant 1,800-year-old baobab tree – baobabs are a symbol of life and prosperity, a very fitting symbol for this park.

There’s nothing better than dining in this dry riverbed, warming up by the fire, and listening to stories about life in this isolated outpost. I have been told that on occasion the approaching waters have brought the evening’s dinner plans to a screeching halt!

The tents are a true oasis, a space to relax, find calm and breathe the scents of Africa.

Our ranger Giovanni expertly guided us as we traveled the park’s winding roads. His enthusiasm and passion for the bush was evident from the start. Ruaha is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with many migratory species visiting during the green season. We even discovered the “brake bird”: our vehicle’s brakes squealed from time to time, confusing everyone as we tried to identify this particular bird song!

Ruaha is home to approximately 10% of Africa’s lion population. We were unlucky not to see them during our stay, due to the thick bush, but we heard the familiar call one evening as we returned to our tents.

The tents are built on raised wooden platforms, under huge thatched roofs. The bathrooms are spacious and feature a walk-in shower, double sinks and plenty of space to unpack your suitcase. The king-size beds are big enough to get lost in! Here, you are at altitude so the nights are cool, it is comforting to lie down and discover the hot water bottle which has been wisely placed there for you.

Jongomero recently opened the exciting Private Bush Manor, a 2-bedroom unit perfect for families or two couples traveling together.. There is a large interactive kitchen where you can watch the chefs expertly prepare your meals. A private safari vehicle and ranger means your days are completely flexible, and your ranger will be happy to tailor each day to your needs.

  • The newly built Private Bush Manor is ideal for families or groups of friends traveling together. Two bedrooms, private chef and ranger. Very attractive price level.
  • Interesting safaris with enthusiastic ranger Giovanni. Private safari vehicle with every booking.
  • They are developing a new hot springs concept about 1 hour from camp, where guests staying longer could spend the day being pampered and spoiled.
  • Combine it with the Serengeti – direct flights from Seronera twice a week – check off the big things, then come here to take it down a gear.

The diverse landscape is punctuated by ancient baobab trees and rolling mountain ranges. It is a haven for elephants, buffaloes, lions and other wild animals. The bird watching is fantastic!

SIWANDU CAMP “To combine land and water for your safari, this is the ideal place. »

The perfect combination of land and water safari activities.

I felt really close to nature, the animals got really close to the camp. One night I woke up to a hippopotamus grazing right next to my tent!

Spread along the banks of Lake Nzerakera, with views of the BehoBeho Mountains, SIWANDA CAMP is an immersive destination where you can soak up the sights and sounds of Africa. Stay in spacious and stylish safari tents. Explore the breathtaking landscape on foot on a morning stroll, by 4×4 vehicle with an expert driver guide, and on the water with river and lake boat cruises. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a Unesco World Heritage and is home to diverse wildlife, with over half of Tanzania’s elephant population, over 40,000 hippos, the continent’s largest lion population and well known for wild dog sightings.

A variety of dining rooms offer panoramic lake views. The food is healthy, innovative and delicious.
Spread along the banks of the lake, Siwandu’ Camp’s luxury tents guarantee maximum privacy and invite you to soak up the sights and sounds of Nyerere.
You get a private safari vehicle with your own private ranger to show you what Africa has to offer.

  • It reminded me of the Lower Zambezi – it’s a place of incredible beauty and diversity.
  • Enjoy an afternoon boat cruise on Lake Nzerakera and watch the enormous crocodiles bask in the sun on the shore and listen to the cacophony of feathered creatures on Bird Island.
  • Being in Siwanda is as relaxed as ever.

A bush baby chattering in the trees and a hyena calling behind the kitchen nearby. This is Africa!

FANJOVE “Perfect for couples and newlyweds wanting a little privacy.”

Each beach villa is open on its front to enjoy the breathtaking ocean views.

White, powdery beaches. Cruise in a dhow while sipping fresh coconuts. A whole island for you….

All meals are served in the lighthouse – built in the 19th century by the Germans. It guided many ships safely into port until it was abandoned in the 1960s. This adds a touch of history to your stay.
Swim and snorkel right off the beach or explore the pristine coral reef. SUP or kayak around the island or enjoy a marine dhow safari in search of spinner dolphins, green turtles and humpback whales (in season).

  • It’s a private island with just one lodge – it doesn’t get more exclusive than that. Tour the island in 45 minutes.
  • Access is only by boat – it’s a pretty grand route to get there!
  • The food is incredible – from chic 5-course dinners to casual beach barbecues. Chef Edmund spent time training in Paris.
  • Fabulous snorkeling – we saw stingrays, puffer fish, crocodile fish, lion fish – with names like that it’s almost like being on safari!

Secluded and exclusive. Fanjove, where time has no influence
