Women have immense potential to make the entire world more prosperous – but despite decades of progress, this potential is yet to be fully realized. Harvard professor Claudia Goldin has dedicated her career to highlighting not only the obstacles women face, but also ways to overcome them. For these efforts, she is the well-deserved winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize. Price in economy.

Goldin is a pioneer on many levels. Of the 93 economic winners since the creation of the prize in 1969, she is only the third woman (and the first to be awarded alone, without a co-recipient). She was the first holder professor in the economics department at Harvard. And at a time when leading academics focused on building elegant but often deeply flawed mathematical models of economics, she stuck to the painstaking work of collecting and analyzing empirical data to establish the truth.
