Inspiring action for the environment through sport
Extreme E is an FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing series that uses electric SUVs to race in remote areas of the world, such as the Saudi Arabian desert or the Arctic. Race locations are chosen to raise awareness of aspects of climate change. Extreme E also maintains a “Legacy Program” to provide social and environmental support to these sites.
Christina Gutiérrez is one of the most talented drivers on the Extreme E circuit and in 2021 became the third woman to reach the Dakar podium after winning a stage in 2021. She explained how the sport can have an impact on the planet during a Fireside Chat on the theme “The future of sport: making an impact on the planet”.
Gutiérrez emphasized that sport can be put at the service of the common good. She is heavily involved in legacy programs during race weeks. His previous work involved teaching innovative and sustainable approaches to building educational infrastructure, such as building environmentally friendly school walls. “By implementing these initiatives, we hope to leave a positive mark on the environment and inspire confidence and responsibility among community members,” she added.
Gutiérrez encouraged women to break stereotypes and pursue their ambitions with determination by using platforms such as sports to educate and inspire their followers.
