Sakaja appoints Olive Mugenda to head health care reforms task force

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has appointed a seven-member task force to review and propose reforms in the county’s health sector.

The team chaired by former Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olive Mugenda, was given 45 days to review citizens’ access to quality health services, assess the status of all health facilities public health and also examine the supply chain management of medical products.

The county, under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), has built 28 hospitals, particularly in the slums, to help residents of informal settlements and also discourage over-reliance on the Kenyatta National Hospital .

“In carrying out its mandate, the task force may, if necessary, co-opt individuals to advise or offer assistance in any area that the task force may deem necessary,” Sakaja’s statement read.

Mr. Sakaja, the task force will also assess the status of health information management and propose interventions to achieve it, also review current human resource capacity and assess gaps, among other issues.

Other members of the task force are Dr Anastacia Nyalita, Dr Githinji Gitahi, Ms Dorcas Kemunto, Ministry of Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr Mercy Mwangangi, St Mary Hospitals founder Dr William Charles Fryda and Ms. Karei Mwenda.

The team will also review and propose an effective health financing model. Before retiring, President Kenyatta commissioned 14 level 2 and 3 hospitals to meet the needs of informal sector residents in areas such as Gichagi in Kangemi, Mukuru Kwa Reuben, Tassia Kwa Ndege and Our Lady of Nazareth in Mukuru Kwa Njenga.

Mr Kenyatta also commissioned the Level 5 Mathare-Korogocho Hospital, renamed Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital.

But there have been complaints that hospitals lack facilities, staff and medicines even after launch.
