Clashes broke out yesterday, between young people from the locality of Ngodiba (Kaffrine department) and the gendarmes, following Flexeau’s referral to the meters of homes where unpaid bills were noted.

Faced with this situation, the president of the Sos consommateurs association in the Kaffrine region, Dame Seck, began mediation in order to bring back the calm. He therefore contacted the governor of Kaffrine and requested the intervention of the highest administrative authority in the region.

“Since we were informed of the situation in Ngodiba a few months ago, we organized a meeting with the sub-prefecture of Gniby, the prefect of the department of Kaffrine and the delegatees of the Flexeau and Ofor companies to find a solution. We therefore tried to convince the authorities to find solutions that were satisfactory for both parties,” said Dame Seck.

The latter indicated that during the negotiations, certain residents of Ngodiba highlighted their inability to pay the fees and had asked to be exempted from paying their bills avoiding a total amount of 60 million CFA francs.

It is in this context that the president of Sos Consommateurs had requested from the parties that negotiations continue until the end of Ramadan to allow everyone to find the best solution.

Dame Seck regrets that these numerous reminders sent to the management of Flexeau and the prefecture in order to continue the negotiations have not had any effect. He is saddened by the violence perpetrated by young people. “This is not the right way to show their frustration. We also regret that the teams from Flexeau and the gendarmerie went in the middle of Ramadan to disconnect the meters of these poor consumers even if we can understand that they have long been patient with the residents. The fact remains that the populations are vulnerable and do not have the means to pay these fees,” stressed Dame Seck.

Dame Seck proposes a reform of water management which will be fair to all.
