THE Cape Winelands In South Africa established itself as the wine capital alongside Bordeaux in France, Adelaide in Australia, Verona in Italy and the Napa Valley in the United States. Here’s a taste of why our country’s “nectar of the gods” is all the rage…
Mixing the best of the best
Many Cape Winelands region wineries have received accolades at the annual awards The best of wine tourism Awards, ranging from best restaurant and service to art and architecture.
These wineries set the benchmark for excellence internationally and embody “the spirit of innovation, sustainability and commitment to excellence”. Here are some of our favorites that made the list.
Wine tourism restaurant – Jordan
Located between mountains and vineyards, The Jordan restaurant is an iconic restaurant in the Cape Winelands. Using only fresh, local ingredients, Chef Marthinus Ferreira offers a contemporary farmhouse experience with his seasonal menu. Yes, exceptional food and award-winning wines are all we need!
While you treat your taste buds, your eyes can take in the views of Stellenbosch’s flower gardens, tranquil ponds and picturesque mountains. At Jordan, everything is superb and you will enjoy it in every detail (and you will fall!).
And while you’re there, we highly recommend spending a night or two at Luxury villas in Jordanthe ideal accommodation for your Cape Winelands getaway.
Wine tourism services – Creation Wines
In the middle of the Walker Bay wine region lies the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, directly translated as “Valley of Heaven and Earth”. Aptly named, we would say, because as you head up the valley from Hermanus, the winding road is flanked by magnificent mountains and vineyards until you reach Creation Wines.
Visitors often praise the staff of Creation Wines so friendly, exceptional and attentive. They have plenty of tasting options to suit every palate, and if you’re still not sure which wines to try, the staff will happily guide you through their range to help you choose.
This state-of-the-art (literally) winery is vibrant, unique and authentic. This year they also won the award in the Art and Culture category.
Art and Culture – Creation Wines
Creation Wines periodically showcases the works of leading South African artists. In 2023, the art exhibition “Equilibrium” was launched by sculptor Nanette Ranger and photographer Sean Ranger to encapsulate “the search for balance amidst the oscillating motion of a world in motion.”
“Transformative experiences are what our customers are looking for, and nature is the very inspiration and innovation that Creation is,” says Carolyn Martin, Director of Creation Creative.
Sustainable wine tourism practices – Vergelegen
Vergelegen is no stranger to awards throughout its 300-year history. This sprawling estate is a favorite destination for locals and international visitors alike. Stroll through the meticulously manicured gardens, across lush lawns, under towering trees, beside streams and through the fragrant rose garden.
The winery prides itself on respecting the land, the people and the community. This is why they have implemented various efforts to combat climate change. For example, they reduce their carbon emissions, use renewable energy solutions and opt for nature-based solutions in the vineyards while recycling and upcycling.
Over the past two decades, they have worked to eradicate exotic plant species and control micropests using native insects. The estate even had longer poles planted between the vines for species of birds of prey. Vergelegen is dedicated to sustainable and careful farming using minimal chemicals and pesticides.
With this meticulous attention to detail, who wouldn’t expect an award-winning wine of the highest caliber? Don’t forget that they offer many different tastings, so be sure to plan ahead so you don’t feel rushed.
