Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives Hanafy Ali El-Gebali met on the sidelines of the 9th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday.
Describing Egypt as a major and influential Muslim state, the Iranian speaker stressed the need to promote cooperation among Islamic nations in West Asia and North Africa.
Qalibaf also noted that closer parliamentary interaction between Iran and Egypt would contribute to the sustainable development of relations between Muslim nations and the settlement of regional issues.
There are good prospects for strengthening cooperation between Tehran and Cairo, added the Iranian spokesperson.
For his part, Gebali said that the participation of Egypt and Iran in the BRICS forum indicates that the two countries are on the right track to strengthen their cooperation.
He also invited the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament to visit Cairo to discuss ways to expand relations between the two countries.
Last week, senior Iranian and Egyptian diplomats held what the Iranian Foreign Ministry called “positive and fruitful” talks in New York to strengthen relations and address the mutual interests of the two countries through constant dialogue.
During a meeting with the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, held in Tehran in May, the Sultan of Oman underlined Egypt’s desire to resume relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran .
In response, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that Iran welcomes this position and has no problem in this regard.
