Learn about Cape Verde travel as the amateur traveler talks to Paulina from paulinaontheroad.com about this island nation off the coast of Africa.
Paulina says: “There are actually many arguments to justify your visit to Cape Verde. In total, there are 10 islands, and each island is a small universe, if not a paradise in itself, because each island is very different from each other. So if you are more of a hiker or outdoor enthusiast, there are islands that have superb hiking trails.
“If you’re more of an all-inclusive type of traveler, and prefer to stay in a hotel and not move from your solarium, there’s an island for that too. If you prefer quiet and quirky and you don’t have a wifi connection at all, there is also an island for that. If you like the city, life and culture more, there are two islands for that too.
“You can really choose an island as a destination, depending on what you like to do on vacation. This is also the reason why many people come back to Cape Verde, because each island among the 10 islands is so different.
Paulina offers a 7-10 day itinerary visiting the southern islands. It starts us in Praia on the island of Santiago. she suggests visiting its music clubs and the Tarrafel concentration camp and taking a tour of the island.
From there we head to São Filipe on the island of Fogo. Fogo Island has an active volcano and visiting the volcano is a must. While you’re there, visit the country’s only winery.
The 3rd island we visit is the green island of Brava with its capital Nova Sintra which is located in the interior of the island. It was moved from the coast during the time when pirates roamed the area.
The last island we visit is Maio. Maio has beautiful beaches, but… at least for now… does not have large international brand hotels. Paulina was isolated in Maio when the country banned travel during Covid and even closed inter-island travel.
Find out why Paulina fell in love with these remote islands and why you might too.
