BBC criticized for calling Hamas ‘fighters’ versus ‘terrorists’

LONDON: The BBC was criticized for describing Hamas personnel as “fighters” as opposed to terrorists in its coverage of attacks on Israel on Saturday morning. reported the Telegraph.

The British television station wrote that “militants” had launched a surprise attack on Israel, which left hundreds dead and thousands injured, referring to Hamas.

Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States have designated Hamas a terrorist organization.

“They break into civilian homes and murder children. It is inconceivable that the one place you are looking for balance, the BBC, is not providing fair, balanced or reasonable coverage,” said Lord Eric Pickles, the UK’s special envoy for post-Holocaust issues.

“This is not an isolated case. They need to get their act together.

Stephen Pollard, editor of the Jewish Chronicle, called the BBC’s refusal to label Hamas fighters “terrorists” “more than just annoying.”

He said: “It is a reflection of a deeper malaise that affects much of our broadcast media: the idea that there are always two sides to every story.

“We hear a lot about the BBC’s (and other channels’) bias against Israel. However, this is not the right way to look at things. They do not intend to write reports to condemn Israel.

“The problem is worse than that. Because they don’t see that there can be a side to a description – that it is more accurate to call a terrorist a terrorist than to call him a militant – so they don’t see the problem that there is to provide, as happened today, a platform for an apologist for terrorism to explain why this is justified.

The attacks, launched by Hamas early Saturday morning, constitute the deadliest attack on Israel since the Yom Kippur War 50 years ago, when Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack.

Israeli television reports put the Israeli death toll from the attack at between 500 and 600 people, with more than 2,000 injured.
