US-funded African scientists seek HIV vaccine as lawmakers debate PEPFAR

The Medical Research Council of South Africa is teaming up with scientists from eight countries on the continent in a U.S.-funded effort to select a vaccine candidate against the virus that causes AIDS.

Molecules potentially capable of triggering an immune response against the virus have already been identified for development into vaccine candidates, said Glenda Graythe president of the South African MRC.
