The Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture held a Pride Month commemoration at the Ken Gampu Theatre.

The event was organized on Tuesday in partnership with the Gauteng East District of the GDE.

Values ​​in Education Coordinator Mamiki Sibeko said the aim of the event is to empower the invited learners and make them agents of change in their schools.

“We promote rights-based, socially cohesive and inclusive schools. We want all our schools to be inclusive for everyone, from all backgrounds.

“We must ensure that all schools and school communities know, respect, protect and promote children’s rights to education,” she said.

Sibeko encouraged learners to be active spectators.

“You are ambassadors of human rights. You have to defend the rights of others, but you have to know those rights first,” she added.

According to the Constitution:

The State may not unfairly discriminate, directly or indirectly, against anyone on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin. , color, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, beliefs, culture. , language and birth.

Learners were provided with a simplified version of the Constitution to enable them to understand their rights and those of others.

Learners from the twenty invited schools also took the time to share their experiences on the challenges of young LGBTIQA+ people in their communities.

Ken Gampu Theater director Zwelibanzi Sibiya encouraged young creatives to submit LGBTIQA+ inclusive shows.

“The truth is that everyone wants to see themselves represented. And although we have seen shows on television featuring LGBTIQA+ people, we have not seen much in the cinema. So my door is open,” he said.

The planned march in the CBD was canceled due to weather conditions.
