The political situation in Senegal discussed in Geneva on the occasion of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights demands the release of other so-called political detainees, including prominent opposition figures.

“The presidential election scheduled for February 25 was canceled last week in Senegal. Following the arbitration of the Constitutional Council affirming that the control must take place as soon as possible. President Macky Sall announced that this is what he would do. The country has been under political and civil tension for the last 3 years with the arrest of around 1000 members of the opposition, and Activists since 2021 some of them have been released under conditions and I also call for the release of those who are still in prison, including prominent opposition figures. I encourage the government to ensure that the conclusions of the dialogue include the free participation of diverse people with all types of political vision,” said the High Commissioner for United Nations on Human Rights Volker Türk.
